Official Wants Aggressive Driver Problem Addressed
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A North Texas transportation official says now is the time to crack down on aggressive drivers and riders.
Michael Morris, transportation director for the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG), said he recently witnessed a biker wreck out his two-wheeler after speeding and weaving along Highway 360.
Morris said speeding motorcycles are a common sight. He described them as, "Very aggressive motorcycle, young motorcycle operators, often weaving through traffic, sometimes going down the dividing line of the freeway."
Morris wants to pursue the creation of a pilot program banning passing on the right. He compared the program to one that currently bans 18-wheelers from the left lane on some North Texas highways.
"It creates more disciplined traffic. It creates a more reliable freeway," Morris said.
Morris and his supporters stress that motorcycles aren't the only hostile people on the roadways.
"We've all seen it with cars," he said. "They start in the outside lane, drift through the distance between, the headway between, the vehicles and go to the right side and drift back."
Transportation officials say the public is demanding that something be done about aggressive drivers.
Morris said he plans to take his 'no passing on the right' idea to city leaders and the state legislature.
