Small Fires Erupt At West Blast Site

WEST (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Officials are telling residents displaced by the massive fertilizer plant explosion in the town of West that tanks on site are leaking gas and causing small fires.

Officials said that the fires are contained, but they are preventing some of those who live nearby from returning to their homes in the town of West.

A CBS 11 News crew was also forced to leave the area and move further from the blast site. They were allowed to return after a short time.

North Texas Pastor G. Laine Robinson told CBS 11 News that he was in West trying to deliver supplies and donations when Texas Department of Public Safety officials told him that he needed to move.

Paramedic Bryce Reed visited a hotel crammed with displaced residents on Saturday and gave a short briefing.

Reed, who is also a spokesman for West, said there may be reports of "another explosion in West," but warned that those are exaggerated.

He said the leaks were caused by tanks damaged by heat and had triggered small fires. He said no further evacuations were necessary.
