Officer Shoots Suspect At Tarrant County College Parking Lot
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - A foot chase by Grand Prairie Police ended across the border in Arlington with the suspect shot in the parking lot of a community college.
The incident started around 4:30 Thursday in Grand Prairie when a man ran away from a Target store on Watson Road along the Arlington/Grand Prairie border.
The man shoplifted unknown items from the store, and ran across the highway toward Tarrant County College's South East Campus on Southeast Parkway and New York Avenue in Arlington.
The suspect was cornered and shot in the south parking lot of the college by a Grand Prairie police officer after grabbing the officer's TASER.
Arlington officer Eric Belisle, a veteran Army Medic, tried to begin CPR. "I could feel a weak pulse so I tried to keep his pulse going." He was unsuccessful. "I saw his wounds, covered up his wounds and then I applied first aid and CPR."
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person involved in the shoplifting was taken into custody.
The officer who shot the suspect was not injured. The officer is a veteran of the department and has been placed on leave for 3 days per police procedure during investigations.
Tarrant County College did not place the campus on lockdown, and no students were in any immediate danger. But some students were not able to get to their cars due to the vehicles being blocked by police.
Police remain on scene and are investigating. Classes at the college will remain in session.
