FARMERS BRANCH (CBSDFW.COM) - Farmers Branch Police Chief Sid Fuller says he has received and has accepted the resignation of Ken Johnson as an officer with the Farmers Branch Police Department, effective immediately.

Johnson is charged in the shooting death of 16-year-old Jose Cruz.

Detectives say on March 13, Johnson saw someone burglarizing a vehicle at a nearby apartment complex. The suspects took off, but Johnson went after them in his own vehicle.

The chase ended in gunfire, with the driver, Cruz, being struck and killed and the passenger suffering injuries as well.

Chief Fuller says Farmers Branch Internal Affairs Investigators have been working tirelessly to investigate this incident.

He went on to say that "notwithstanding Officer Johnson's resignation we will continue our thorough review of the information collected and work to conclude the investigation; however, no official employment action will be taken in light of today's resignation."

The Addison Police Department continues their criminal investigation as well.
