Off-Duty Officer Killed In Dallas Motorcycle Crash
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - An off-duty Balch Springs police officer was killed in an early morning motorcycle crash on Sunday, along a ramp leading onto eastbound Interstate-30 near downtown Dallas, according to Dallas Police Department spokesman Warren Mitchell.
Mitchell said that the officer, later identified as 35-year-old Matthew Garcia, was traveling northbound on Cesar Chavez Boulevard at 12:55 a.m. and drove up the ramp leading to Interstate-30. He had trouble handling a curve and hit the left retaining wall, Mitchell said.
Garcia was thrown from the motorcycle and fell to the eastbound shoulder of the freeway. Mitchell estimated the drop to be between 30 and 50 feet.
Mitchell said that the officer's wife was following her husband in a car. She saw the crash and called 911. The man was declared dead at Baylor Medical Center at 1:35 a.m. that morning.
Garcia was a four-year veteran of the Balch Springs Police Department. His wife, who was not identified, is also a police officer. The two lived in Kaufman.
