Fort Worth Firefighter Killed In Motorcycle Crash

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - An off-duty Fort Worth firefighter is dead following a motorcycle crash in the 300 block of Sycamore School Road, close to Interstate-35W. The crash happened around 6:45 p.m. Monday evening, about one mile away from the firefighter's home.

The victim was identified as 42-year-old Lylian "Randy" Berry Jr. of Fort Worth. According to a press release, Berry and a female passenger -- later identified as 37-year-old Shymill Murphy -- were riding on the motorcycle when the firefighter lost control and crashed. Authorities said that he had swerved to avoid a turning SUV. "The driver of the motorcycle was transported to an area hospital, where we later found out that he died," said Fort Worth Police Department spokeswoman Sharron Neil.

Officials have not said if either victim was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Police are still conducting an investigation.

Berry worked at Fire Station 28 on Everman Parkway in the southern part of the city. His co-workers were the first to arrive at the crash scene, and some of them even accompanied him and Murphy to the hospital. Berry had been with the Fort Worth Fire Department since 2006 after serving for four years in the Air Force. He is survived by 19-year-old and 15-year-old daughters.

The press release said that the Fort Worth Fire Department was "deeply saddened at the unexpected loss of one of its members."
