Obama To Open Jobs Tour In Austin

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama wants to show that creating well-paying middle-class jobs is still a priority.

On Thursday, Obama was using bustling Austin, Texas, as the backdrop to talk about attracting jobs, teaching skills and ensuring workers can earn a decent living.

A White House official says Obama will announce a competition to create three Manufacturing Innovation Institutes. They are partnerships among businesses, universities and community colleges, and government to help U.S.-based manufacturers and workers create jobs. He'll ask Congress for $1 billion to create a network of 15 such institutes.

The official says Obama also will require the government to make its data easily available to businesspeople, researchers and others.

The official spoke anonymously because the official was not allowed to be quoted by name before Obama's announcement.
