Obama & Perry To Discuss Border Crisis
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The crisis at the border will bring together two political rivals on Wednesday in Dallas. President Barack Obama will touch down in North Texas and meet face-to-face with Gov. Rick Perry. The two men will have a one-on-one discussion regarding the crisis on the border.
The meeting comes after Perry asked for more than "a handshake on the tarmac" when Obama arrives in Texas.
Air Force One is scheduled to land at DFW International Airport on Wednesday afternoon. The President will then make his way to Dallas Love Field, where he is expected to meet with area faith leaders. Those leaders are part of a logistics team planning for an estimated 2,000 immigrant children who will be coming to North Texas from overcrowded detention centers along the border.
Some officials in Dallas County have already pledged to provide emergency shelters for the surge of immigrant children, despite opposition from other county leaders.
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings is looking for guidance from the federal government. He wants to know what else the city needs to do in order to be ready for housing such a large number of immigrant children. The shelters are expected to be ready by later this month. "It's something that is a tough issue, but it's not as tough as these are human beings. These are children," said Rawlings. "It's our obligation to make sure we put them in a safe environment. And the best way we can do that, I'm supportive of."
After meeting with Perry and the group of religious leaders, and then attending a fundraiser in Dallas, Obama will board Air Force One again to head for Austin, where he will appear at another fundraising event.
