NTTA Contract Worker Killed By Hit-&-Run Driver

GRAND PRAIRIE (CBSDFW.COM) - A hit-and-run driver slammed into a North Texas Tollway Authority convoy early Monday morning in Grand Prairie, killing a contract worker.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said that a crew was working along the right shoulder at the end of the on-ramp from Lower Tarrant Road to the President George Bush Turnpike. A black Chevrolet Impala roared past the truck and struck a trailer carrying the construction worker, who was putting down reflective pavement markers.

Officials said that warning lights were on and arrows were instructing drivers to move into the lefthand lanes. The driver of the Impala, however, did not follow those directions and headed to the right.

"The impact killed the worker that was seated in the trailer instantly," said Sgt. Lonny Haschel with Texas DPS. "The Impala then veered back to the left and crossed all three lanes of the PGBT, where it then struck another road maintenance truck that was parked on the left shoulder next to the concrete barrier."

The Dallas County Medical Examiner has identified the victim as 41-year-old Camerino Sixtos. Another worker was taken to Arlington Memorial Hospital with injuries which are not life threatening.

The two people inside of the Impala left the crash scene in an another vehicle before first responders could arrive. "Driver and at least one other occupant -- may have been two -- got in another vehicle and they left the scene," Haschel stated. "That's a fail to stop and render aid is the actual charge, and when there's serious bodily injury or for fatality, it's actually a felony."

Texas DPS has determined the owner of the Impala, and is hoping that this information will lead them to the driver who caused the wreck.

The southbound lanes of the turnpike were closed at Lower Tarrant Road for almost six hours so that authorities could conduct an investigation, said NTTA spokesperson Susan Slupecki.

"Our thoughts go out to the family," Slupecki said in statement Monday morning. "It goes without saying that the safety of anyone driving or doing work on a NTTA road is paramount to us. We will work with the Department of Public Safety as they investigate and look for those responsible for this tragic accident."
