DALLAS (105.3 Fan) - Sources tell 105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher that Dirk Nowitzki has chosen to not exercise his option for another year on his contract, making him a free agent.

Dirk will immediately be courted by the Mavericks when free agency begins on July 1. Nowitzki had to decide by Wednesday whether to opt out or not.

The Mavericks forward would have been paid $8.6 million in the final year of his deal.

Earlier today we wrote about the Golden State Warriors interest in Nowitzki.

Ultimately, it would be an upset if Nowitzki doesn't return to the Mavs on at least a 2-year-deal with flexibility. Dirk has never expressed a desire to play anywhere else but Dallas. The team is hopeful they can lock him and Chandler Parsons up quickly, so that they can move on with their free agent planning.

Parsons, meanwhile, hasn't opted out of his current contract, but it's expected that he will soon.

I expect the Mavs to get something done with both players as soon as it can be announced on July 1.

This is a developing story. Refresh for the latest details.
