JUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM) - Northwest ISD Superintendent Karen G. Rue, Ed.D., expressed her intent to retire effective July 31, 2016, at the board meeting on January 28 according to an NISD news release Thursday night.
"It has truly been an honor to be part of Northwest ISD. I'm looking forward to the adventures and opportunities retirement will bring and am excited about the possibility of exploring other avenues I might want to pursue," said Rue. "It has been a joy to be part of the Northwest ISD family, and Northwest will continue to be my home."
Rue sent a letter to staff, thanking them for their support and sharing news of her retirement, at the close of the board meeting.
The NISD Board of Trustees expects to begin the search for a new superintendent in February.
"Dr. Rue has been an inspirational leader, and we will be forever grateful for her leadership and vision," said Josh Wright, president of the Northwest ISD Board of Trustees. "We were saddened to learn of her retirement plans. She has led our future-ready vision and initiated a transformational shift in education. Understanding the importance of preparing today's students for tomorrow's future, she implemented initiatives to help strengthen student engagement, deepen student learning and open doors for innovation, creativity and experiential learning."
During her 11 years as superintendent, Northwest ISD experienced tremendous student enrollment growth, increasing from 8,700 students to 21,000, according to the news release. Under the guidance of a detailed strategic plan and a future-ready vision, the district has implemented such initiatives as the NISD Community-Based Accountability system, distribution of student tablets and netbooks, problem-based learning, expansion of the NISD Academies and development of the Outdoor Learning Center.
Rue began her 37-year career in education as a sixth-grade teacher and has since served as an elementary school teacher, assistant principal, principal and executive director. She joined Northwest ISD in 2005 from Tuloso-Midway ISD where she was superintendent.
"As much as we hate to say goodbye, though, we know that our district's future-ready vision will continue. The Northwest ISD Board of Trustees is committed to doing what is best for our students, parents, staff and community members. As we begin the search for a new superintendent, we are dedicated to finding the right person to continue our path of transformation and future-ready excellence," said Wright. "We wish Dr. Rue and her family all the best."
