North Texas Wearing Throwback Uniforms For Opener

DENTON (AP) -- North Texas will wear throwback uniforms for the opener of its 100th season, paying tribute to the different eras of Mean Green football.

The dark green jersey, including stripes on the sleeve, is like what Mean Joe Greene wore in the 1960s and the school used from 2001-04 when UNT won four Sun Belt Conference titles and went to four bowl games. The white helmets are like those worn from the 1950s until 1967, including 1956 when Abner Haynes helped integrate college football in Texas.

The ``Flying Worm'' logo from 1973-82 will be on the helmets from the time Hayden Fry was coach. The white pants will have a double green stripe down the sides.

The uniforms will be used only for the Aug. 31 home opener vs. Idaho and then auctioned.
