North Texas Students Rally For Trayvon Martin
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- Students from three north Texas universities came together Thursday night to peacefully protest the acquittal of George Zimmerman.
More than a hundred college students from University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Christian University, and University of North Texas attended the protest on the Arlington campus.
"Clearly there is some changes that need to be made," said UTA student Michael Coleman. The president of the school's NAACP chapter organized the protest.
Coleman, along with other organizers, encouraged students to use their voices, their votes, and even their twitter accounts to end stereotypes and to change unjust laws.
Several students at the protest brought Skittles, the candy Trayvon Martin was carrying when he was killed.
Some said the Skittles remind them of how much work needs to be done.
Arlington chapter NAACP president Alisa Simmons said she's encouraged by the young generation but also worries about their safety – especially the safety of young black men.
"These students that you see here tonight will be profiled," she said after speaking at the protest.
Many of the students at the protest Thursday said they will be attending a prayer vigil for Martin on Saturday at Dallas City Hall. Rev. Al Sharpton is also expected to attend the prayer.
