North Texas Students Head Back To School
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The first day of school is finally here, for most North Texas students.
Sunday night, parents crowded stores shopping for last minute supplies.
"I'm glad to see all my friends," said Caroline Kraft, 7, who's entering the second grade.
Her mother is just as excited.
"I'm a working mom so it's great," said Heather Kraft.
"It has been a long summer," agrees Reshunda Hightower, who was picking up the final item on her list, backpacks.
The mother of two boys estimates she spent $800 dollars in back to school shopping, much of it on new shoes.
Immunizations are also in demand.
Hundreds of students showed up for shots Friday at Dallas County Health and Human Services.
The agency expects another busy day Monday.
At Dallas ISD, meanwhile, Mike Miles is preparing to mark his first day of school as superintendent of the district.
"It's the first day of school tomorrow, and if you're an educator, that is where the action is," he said.
Over in Fort Worth, Walter Dansby will also experience the start of a school for the first time as superintendent.
"I think what's important is that we stay connected to our children and that's very important, even as superintendent," he told CBS 11 News on Friday.
One new challenge this year will be the West Nile virus.
At DISD schools, Miles says, bug spray will be available for students.
District leaders will meet tomorrow to decide whether they will request students wear long sleeves to school.
