Severe Weather Moves Across North Texas
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Storms continue to develop across parts of North Texas this evening. Several areas west of the Metroplex reported heavy rains, hail and high winds at times prompting storm warnings.
CBS 11 Chief Meteorologist Larry Mowry reported that North Texas residents should expect storms - possibly severe - to move through the area Tuesday afternoon.
Oncor said 10,000 people in North Texas were with out power by 4 p.m. Several fences and power poles are down in McKinney where winds picked up speeds of up to 68 mph.
CBS 11's JD Miles reported seeing overturned trash cans as a result of the high winds after the heavy rain passed. Shingles were ripped off roof tops in Haslet, 73 mph winds blew through Denton and 69 mph winds ripped through Garland.
Power outages in Allen were also reported and trees are down in Wise County and Decatur.
Both Fort Worth ISD and Arlington ISD experienced phone system issues due to the storms.
Any storm that formed Tuesday could have produced heavy rain, large hail, damaging winds, dangerous lightning and tornadoes. Almost an inch of rain fell in Dallas, according to Mowry.
CBS 11 Meteorologist Jeff Jamison cautions people who are driving to avoid low lying areas. High water was reported at Highway 183 near 360.
According to the CBS 11 Storm Team, a more organized line of storms - with severe potential - is expected to move through the area from northwest to southeast around 3pm. Also, any super-cell storms that form ahead of this line will have the potential of becoming severe.
Gov. Rick Perry has ordered a Level II Activation of the State Operations Center (SOC) in light of yesterday's tragic tornado, which hit Moore, Oklahoma.
"The most important thing Texans in the path of these storms should do is remain aware of their surroundings, heed the warnings of local officials and be prepared to shelter in place if necessary," Gov. Perry said.
Level II indicates a partial activation of the full Emergency Management Council.
