North Texas Police Say Users Cooking Up A Dangerous New High
COLLIN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Plano and other Collin County cities are seeing more and more cases of teenagers and young adults smoking 'dabs.' Dabs is a high concentration of marijuana that is considered dangerous.
One teenager told CBS 11 News the drug is exploding in popularity.
When CBS 11 met with the girl she was giving her mother a hug and walking into the Collin County Jail. The 18-year-old, who asked not to be identified, is an admitted drug user.
She said one of her drugs of choice these days is a form of marijuana called dabs or wax. "It's a lot more delicious," she said.
Perhaps more delicious, but to users it is also far more potent.
Dabs is a sticky yellow wax, made from the THC in marijuana. After the wax is made it's smoked in a pipe, creating a more intense high.
Grace Raulston, a drug counselor with Collin Co. Substance Abuse Program, recently learned about dabs from a 15-year-old user and now knows many users.
"I've been getting a lot of reports during my assessments that there are adults and juveniles using this," she said.
But making the drug is maybe more dangerous than smoking it.
The teenage admitted drug user explained that, "You like blast butane through a tube." It takes the explosive combination of butane and aerosol to make the wax, which the teen says, is becoming popular. "It's everywhere -- house parties, behind hookah bars, garages," she said.
Even though the teenager is planning to attend Collin College in the fall and is facing two nights in jail, she said she doesn't plan to stop smoking.
"They say it's more dangerous?" she questioned. "I don't really believe it's bad for you at all."
Some of the side effects of dabs are memory loss, nausea and dizziness.
People apparently first started cooking up the drug in California, but police say it's been creeping into North Texas and being taken very seriously by narcotics officers.
