North Texas Pastor Facing W.Va. Sex Charge Hangs Self In Jail

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia State Police are investigating the death of a North Texas pastor who killed himself while in custody on a sexual assault charge.

Sgt. T.S. Mills tells media outlets that 41-year-old Matthew Jarrell of Terrell, hanged himself with a bed sheet in his cell.

Regional jail authority acting chief of operations John Lopez says Jarrell was found late Saturday night. Efforts to revive him weren't successful. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Jarrell was being held at the South Central Regional Jail in Kanawha County following his arrest Thursday on a second-degree sexual assault charge. Police say Jarrell was accused of sexually assaulting a woman he had met in a Charleston bar.
