North Texas Native Rescues Man From NYC Subway Tracks
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - Tense moments at a New York City subway over the weekend. A man, knocked unconscious, fell onto the subway tracks with an approaching train less than two minutes away.
Garrett O'Hanlon didn't think twice. He jumped to the rescue. Garrett's dad lives in Fort Worth.
"He did the right thing," said Brian O'Hanlon.
"You never know until you're in a situation like that. I don't know what I would've done," he added.
Garrett found out early Sunday morning.
"From the corner of my eye, I saw him fall," Garrett told CBS 11 via SKYPE.
A heavyset man stumbled and hit his head causing him to tumble down to the tracks.
"He landed face first on the metal part of the track. So, he was knocked out unconscious," Garrett said.
Garrett O'Hanlon, who lives in Colorado now, was in New York visiting with his sister who was standing with him on the platform.
They were celebrating his birthday. He had just turned 22 on Valentine's Day. He was able to get a three day pass from the Air Force Academy, which he had joined after graduating in 2010 from Keller ISD's Fossil Ridge High.
In his senior year, Garrett was the captain of the basketball team.
"I don't think I was the best player. I guess I was more the morale builder," he said.
He had heart. He still does, which is why he didn't think twice before jumping to save the man.
"I saw a man down. Nobody wants to see another man die," he said.
That man was too heavy for Garrett to carry alone. Two other men jumped down to help.
"Without them, it could've been a very bad sight," he said.
"Got him up to the platform. The people on the platform are grabbing our shirts, the victim's shirt. And, they're pulling us up. The train's coming. It was just very surreal," he said.
You never know what you'll do in an emergency. Now, Garrett knows.
"I'm very glad I DID react in that way," he said.
He just doesn't want to have to do it again.
