North Texas Jobs Outlook Brighter For Some Industries
RICHARDSON (CBSDFW.COM) - Pamela Daniel may be out of work, but she is not out of hope. "It's been really stressful," said Daniel. "Without my family supporting me, I probably wouldn't be here today."
After working in retail with the same company for 7 years, the mother of 2 was laid off in 2009, and has been unemployed since.
Daniel and others at Workforce Solutions in Richardson are meeting with employment counselors hoping to pair up their skills with job openings.
William Marzullo with Manpower Dallas says he's optimistic about the jobs outlook. "It's still a good environment to find a job." Marzullo says the North Texas jobs outlook in the upcoming quarter is positive overall.
According to a Manpower Survey released Tuesday, 15 percent of the companies interviewed say they plan to hire more employees.
While that number didn't change from the previous quarter -- the number of companies that said they expect to lay off workers did. Eight-percent expect to cut staff... that's up from two-percent last quarter.
Marzullo says a surprise for the DFW area is that retail jobs are down. He says that's a sector that usually hires more over the summer with positions for teenagers and college students coming home looking for temporary work.
So where are the jobs in North Texas? Manpower says you'll find them in manufacturing, leisure and hospitality, business services and surprisingly construction, which has been at an all time-low nationally but has come back strong in north Texas. "Public projects such as bridges and roads then effect government hiring but also smaller construction projects more people are fixing up their homes."
Marzullo says jobs are still available for workers, but most of the jobs are hourly and temporary and says that will likely remain the case another 12 to 18 months.
