North Texas Gets Hit With Two Earthquakes In Two Days

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - Two earthquakes in two days just two miles apart in Irving has many asking what's going on.

Sunday's earthquake, with the epicenter near Loop 12 just south of Hwy 183, was a 2.5 magnitude.

It was the seventh in Irving in the past two months.

Saturday's was the strongest of the seven with a 3.3 magnitude recording.

There have been no reports of any damage from the relatively small earthquake.

Yet, the United States Geological Survey is asking anyone who felt Saturday or Sunday's earthquakes to go to its website (www.usgs.gov) and fill out the "Did you feel it?" survey.

The government is hoping to learn more about this recent string of earthquakes in North Texas.

One Irving resident Eugene Torrence said he thought an "explosion went off" on Saturday when he felt his apartment shake.

"All I heard was a big rattling noise and I woke-up and the TV was moving," he explained.

People reported on social media feeling Saturday's 3.3 magnitude earthquake from East Dallas to Fort Worth to as far north as Justin.

Augustine Martinez, another Irving resident, said Sunday's earthquake caught him by surprise.

"The whole place shook," he said. "That was weird."

Earthquakes in Irving are nothing new, but geologists say seven in Irving in the past two months is a lot.

The increase in the number of small earthquakes in North Texas raises speculation that hydraulic fracking may be contributing factor.

"I think that it does have something to do with fracking," said Torrence.

But many geologists say it nearly impossible to pinpoint the cause for these earthquakes.
