North Texas Charities Compete For A Big Donation
FRISCO (CBS 11 NEWS) - It is a contest where everyone wins. But some North Texas charities are wringing their hands while waiting and hoping to win a big donation.
Frisco Family Services is among seven North Texas non-profits competing for a total of $100,000 in Liberty Mutual's "Like My Community" campaign.
The organization that gets the most votes on a Facebook page receives $30,000 at a time when non- profits like Frisco Family Services are struggling for funding.
Michelle Mcvay has been relying on the food pantry at Frisco Family Services since a disability left her unable to work since January.
"They've been just wonderful. The staff here they explain to you everything you need," says McVay.
Mcvay is one of more than 1000 needy residents served by Frisco Family Services which is campaigning for votes from the public.
"This is huge for us. We are the only food pantry in Frisco and this $30,000 is really going to go a long way toward allowing us to move into a new building and meet the needs we have now," says Nicole Bursey, Frisco Family Services.
The food pantry has outgrown its home in Frisco.
The no- profit will use whatever money it wins to move into a newer larger building down the street.
That new facility will allow wheelchair access and give customers with limited choices in life like Michelle Mcvay a lot more options at the grocery store.
