North Texas Center Offers More Than Safe Shelter For Homeless

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - After getting attention from some unlikely sources, one north Texas homeless shelter is looking to make a long term impact.
Both Operation Kindness, an animal shelter, and Norma's Cafe stopped by the Austin Street Center Shelter in Dallas Tuesday with puppies to entertain and feed clients.
Nationally recognized for its unique therapeutic program for the homeless, the shelter offers a safe place to stay and an evening meal for more than 300 men and women each night. It also provides substance abuse treatment, medical and psychiatric care, adult rehabilitation, a transitional living facility and an interdenominational Chapel.
Daniel Roby with the shelter said what they really need this Christmas are cash donations.
"One of our greatest needs is to increase the size of our case management staff so that we hear everyone's individual story and create an individual plan on how they don't have to experience homelessness anymore," he said. "Cause we're not just about providing basic needs and safe shelter, but transitioning people out of homelessness so they don't have to experience this next year."
Roby said in the short term the shelter needs winter coats.
