North Texas Business Celebrates Sweet Day
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - If you needed an excuse to exercise your sweet tooth, Wednesday is your lucky day. Thanks to the fine folks at the American Pie Council, January 23 has been declared National Pie Day.
Apple. Pineapple. Peach. Strawberry. Lemon. What's your favorite flavor? A North Texas business has made it -- dare I say -- easy as pie for you to decide.
Glenn and Marty Mayer, along with their daughter, Mindy Lu, have turned a successful pie making business into a very tasty treat for their customers. You've probably seen the creation in stores across North Texas: Mindy Lu's Pies.
Glenn Mayer told CBS 11 News that he started on this journey by making a couple of small fried pies a day. Now, business is sweet. On an average day, his crew is cranking out 20,000 to 30,000 fried pies! Do the math, while taking a bite, and that comes out to 100,000 of the crescent shaped desserts and snacks a week. Those pies are sent to distributors which end up in stores across 20 states.
The journey has taken the family business from a small restaurant in Azle to a shop on Meadowbrook Drive in Fort Worth, and then Mindy Lu's Pies on East Loop 820, originally inspired by an anorexia treatment story in the family. In 2008, the Mayers moved into a bigger production facility off Highway 287 in southwest Arlington.
It was about that same time that Glenn said they tried something new with the packaging. Customers looking for an expiration date will find that along with a printed Bible verse. You might call it spiritual fulfillment to go along with a full stomach.
And, for the record, the Mayers have several fried pie flavors to choose from. There are the traditional flavors including apple, chocolate and cherry, as well as more exotic tastes including strawberry cheesecake.
So, find your favorite pie shop on Wednesday. Sit down. Place that napkin under your chin. Dig in and enjoy! We all deserve a sweet treat once in a while.
