North Texas Basketball Team Is On A Mission To Wipe Out Cancer
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) - It was a time to relax, enjoy the fun of professional basketball and forget about chemotherapy, radiation and cancer.
The non-profit organization "Wipe Out Kids Cancer" took their young ambassadors and family members for a night out with the Texas Legends in Frisco Saturday night.
They enjoyed pizza before the game, met the players and were introduced center court before the game.
For nine year old Korban Cox and his father, Chris, it was guys night out, a much different atmosphere than the fear they've been through in the battle to beat cancer.
"It was moment by moment. The doctors didn't know if he'd live or not, " says Chris Cox.
Korban was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoma Leukemia, two days after Christmas in 2013, just five months after he was adopted by the Cox's.
To help them get the word out to all of Korban's supporters the family started a Facebook page called, Kick It Korban. It was the family's way of staying close to friends and family while also spending most of their time at the hospital.
Korban's cancer attacked his bone marrow and caused his bones to become brittle. Since his diagnosis, he has suffered from fractures to both of his femur bones and his tibia.
"He's a lot better. I mean the doctors really did their job, " says Cox. Korban is in remission and he's re-learning how to walk with the help of a walker. It means he still has to spend much of his time in a wheelchair.
"I want to chainsaw it in half, burn it and then send it to the junk yard" says Korban. He's anxious to walk and play outside with friends.
Korban says he had a lot of fun at the game. He and his family look forward to celebrating a life without cancer.
CBS 11 News is dedicating Tuesday, April 7th, to an all-day effort to help Wipe Out Kids Cancer, a local organization formed in 1980 to help raise awareness and funding for pediatric cancer research.
