DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - After months of speculation, it was confirmed Monday night that the police officer who shot and killed an unarmed teenager in Ferguson, Missouri will not face criminal charges. The decision has generated a lot of reaction in North Texas and across the entire nation.

About a dozen demonstrators gathered outside of the Dallas Police Department's headquarters on Monday night. That gathering included members of the organization Mothers Against Police Brutality. The group consists of parents whose children were killed in police shootings.

The parents are calling on North Texans, even members of Congress, to look at what can be learned from cases like the one in Ferguson. "It's time for that elevation," said Mothers Against Police Brutality founder Collette Flanagan. "We're going to demand changes and accountability in our communities."

The protests in Dallas were peaceful, but violence has erupted in other cities. Rocks were thrown at police officers and news crews in Ferguson, police cars were set on fire and businesses were destroyed. Traffic was blocked by protests in Los Angeles.

Even without protesting along city streets, many North Texans are making their voices heard on social media websites.

Meanwhile, in Atlanta, the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. said that a better relationship is needed between officials in law enforcement and the communities that they serve. "I kind of hear my father's words," said Bernice King. "We've got some difficult days ahead. It's a very sad and somber moment."
