North Texans Ponder How To Spend Lotto Jackpot
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - It was the moment that hundreds of thousands of Mega Millions lottery ticket holders have been waiting for -- the drawing for the world record $640 million lottery jackpot was held Friday night.
The winning numbers are: 2, 4, 23, 38, 46. And the Mega Ball is: 23.
Ticket sales ended at 9:45 p.m. on Friday evening. Stores that sold lottery tickets dealt with a rush of people hoping that they had the right numbers.
In Texas, between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Friday, sales of Mega Millions tickets topped $60,000 per minute. By comparison, the average yearly family income for a Texas family is just over $47,000.
But the $640 million Mega Millions jackpot fueled many dreams at Fuel City in Dallas.
Trey Hardy is a teacher from DeSoto. His plans for the $640 million dollar jackpot? "I'm going to buy an island," he said with a laugh.
For Janice Hicks of Dallas, it's the dream of owning her own business, a funeral home. "People never stop dying. Never stop dying. They won't!" she said.
Raoul Lopez of DeSoto would pay it forward. "Take care of people that take care of me," he said.
But if you win the $640 million jackpot, and you're feeling philanthropic, you could give $100 to everyone in the Metroplex. Or, with $640 million burning a hole in your pocket, you could buy the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in Dallas -- three of them, actually -- and still have $94 million left. "No, I'll leave that to someone else. But I drive on it," said Schekeita King.
Or how about buying the Omni Hotel with $477 million? That would leave you with $163 million. King said, "Yeah, I'd do that!"
And, maybe a new house would be in order. "I've seen one in Highland Park, $18 million. Actually looked it up on the computer today," Lopez said.
The most expensive house in North Texas would be a steal at $39 million, but it already belongs to Tom and Cindy Hicks. "Ha! That'd be too much house for me!" said Etoria Polk.
You couldn't buy Jerry's House though. Cowboys Stadium would cost $1.4 billion. And you couldn't buy the team either. According to Forbes, you'd need $1.8 billion to purchase the Dallas Cowboys. But with so much money, you could probably buy a piece of the action. Janice Hicks said, "A piece of them. 'Cause Jerry Jones not gonna let me have it all!"
If no one wins, the next drawing is Tuesday. The jackpot would go up to $975 million.
