North Texans In Florida Scrambling To Avoid Matthew

NORTH TEXAS (CBS11) - The rush to get out of Hurricane Matthew's way is being felt in North Texas with a mixture of relief and disappointment.
"We were so much looking forward to it," said Irene Aguilar, of a much anticipated, first trip to Cuba. "We were supposed to go to see the USA Men's soccer team play Cuba in Cuba on Friday!"
But, the family's trip was cut short by Matthew before they could get out of the states. They made it as far as Miami.
"There'll be another time," added Alicia Solares, a friend and traveling companion. In spite of the disappointment, Solares says Matthew's Caribbean destruction was warning enough: few north Texans wanted to take any chances with the deadly storm.
"We had like a 747 and it was completely full… everybody was getting out!"
If they could.
"It was very hard to get on a flight. Very hard," said Teri Knapp, while waiting for her bags Thursday afternoon at DFW Airport. "And the airports were packed."
Teri and her husband Curtis say they are among the lucky ones—their original flight home was canceled late last night.
"You could hear the people around and behind you saying 'man, I barely made this flight' and there's those that haven't…they'd gotten the flight to Miami, but were still trying to find ways to get to their homes. So it was pretty scary."
Others are trying to rent cars and drive out of harm's way.
"I am so glad," added Teri, "when we got on and we were like 'thank you Lord!'"
