Texans Desperate For Work Discuss Obama Speech
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - As President Obama spelled out his jobs plan to the nation Thursday night, a group of North Texans who are looking for work watched closely.
Each has a desperate need to find a job.
"It's tough," says George Sance from Fort Worth "The competition is tough."
Sance has been looking for a job for more than two years and has applied for dozens of jobs but has had no luck.
When asked if he felt hopeful after the President's address he replied," Not really. Not really."
Carla Roberts, a single mother from Dallas, feels a little more optimistic especially about the President's American Jobs Act which would provide tax credits for businesses hiring workers unemployed for more than six months.
"It's been tough," says Roberts "I'm hoping that things can work out and like he said quickly."
President Obama's address resonated with Roberta Moss and Dave Fischer from Weatherford, but what happens now is what matter to them.
"I think it's a little too late," says Moss "I do think it can make a difference
for all of us."
Fischer echoes that sentiment, "I'm just not sure there is enough substance in the jobs act where it would make a difference. Plus he said it was all paid for but then he went into reforming Medicare and closing loop holes and having the wealthy and big corporations pay taxes. It sounds to me if we don't do that then it's not paid for."
Everyone on the panel has turned to a number of job placement agencies hoping they can be placed with something even short term.
The one thing the panel did say repeatedly was that the President's plan sounds a lot like the economic stimulus package he signed into law in 2009.
