North Texans Deal With Dense Fog

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - North Texas does not get dense fog very often, so many people were shocked to see that it rolled into the area on Tuesday morning. Visibilities were extremely low across the Metroplex, less than a quarter of a mile, and even less than one-tenth of a mile in some locations.

A Dense Fog Advisory is now in effect until noon on Tuesday. The fog is expected to clear out within the early afternoon hours. But not before causing problems for early commuters.

Drivers are advised to move slowly, and be on the lookout for other vehicles that are also moving slowly. With dry roads and seemingly little traffic, it is tempting to travel at normal speeds. But you may not see something in front of you with enough time to slam on the brakes. Slow down to avoid any dangerous situations.

Also, drivers should consider turning down the radio and cracking open a window. That way, it is possible to hear -- not just see -- anything that may be around, like a car braking.

Finally, fight that urge to turn on your vehicle's high beams. Believe it or not, they will decrease visibilities, because that added light reflects off of the fog.

Those traveling by plane on Tuesday morning should leave for the airport a little earlier than usual, in order to navigate through the foggy conditions slowly and safely.

A ground stop went in effect Tuesday morning at DFW International Airport for arriving air traffic. This created delays lasting through the rest of the day. Many departures have been canceled and arrivals were diverted to other airports, so travelers should be sure to check their flight status before leaving home.

Dallas Love Field is seeing similar delays and cancellations.

Some travelers arriving in DFW on Tuesday morning were surprised that their planes landed in such dense fog. "There was no visibility for the flight to land," recalled Heather McNeely. "I was an intense landing, and I fly 10 times a month. It was intense."
