North Dallas Shooting Ruled Accidental

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The shooting death of an eight-year old Dallas boy is now categorized by police as an accident, but there are still unanswered questions regarding how kids got their hands on a shotgun.

Keiveon Johnson died. A six-year child was also injured.  The shooting occurred at the Spanish Point Apartments in Northwest Dallas.

Police still don't know where this gun came from, or how it got into a child's hands.  The mother of the accused shooter left the boys alone.  There was a argument between the boys, then one used the weapon.

"I take them to school every morning, I should've took him home," Alonzo Stewart is trying to get beyond the guilt.  He is the one who took his 6-year-old son Daishon and three other boys home from school and watched them run to a neighbors apartment.

Eight-year old Keiveon Johnson, known as "Bubba", died from a shotgun blast, fired by the oldest boy in the group.

"I should've took him home. I didn't want him to get hurt. I knew he was alright because he was with my son, but I should've taken him home," says Stewart

Daishon also suffered an injury from the shooting.

Detectives outline circumstances too often seen: an accessible weapon, no adult supervision.  "I don't think this was intentional, I think it was an accidental shooting, regardless, a weapon was present, that didn't accidentally show up," says Deputy Chief Craig Miller.

Counselors were assigned to Gooch Elementary School, where friends of Keiveon Johnson attended.  It's where Alonzo Stewart could be found too, trying to comprehend how kids he cared for ended up in a tragedy of this sort.

Friday night, the grief was too much to handle for Keiveon Johnson's mother.  She struggled to make it through a candlelight vigil.

Nearly 50 friends, neighbors and family members joined the mother to remember the boy known as Bubba.

"He was just the nicest person, sweetest thing.  We all loved him.  Everyone in the world loved him," says Walter Johnson, the boy's uncle.

Meanwhile, there could be action taken by Child Protective Services regarding parental oversight at the apartment where the shooting happened.  And the Grand Jury will determine if anyone will face criminal charges.  The accused shooter is with his family.
