No Lights Means No GCISD Home Games

GRAPEVINE (CBS 11 NEWS) - It's a big day in the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District. The district is about to kick off its first football game of the school year, except it won't be at home like everyone was hoping. Instead, the game is being played at another stadium, in another district.

"We would be stocking the concessions right now," explained Penney Williams, President of the Grapevine-Colleyville Band Booster Club. "You would have a lot of parents in here."

No football tonight at Mustang Panther Stadium in Grapevine means no concessions packed with all those goodies like hot dogs, nachos and candy.

"It is going to be a big hit on our funding," Williams said.

The district was forced move three of its home games because of a broken light pole at its stadium. More than a week ago, an 80-foot pole toppled from the concrete base on the backside of the stadium.

Just to be safe, the district removed the remaining lights and will replace them during the week of September 17. Those lights are now in a parking lot near the stadium, which is off limits.

The band booster club makes about $6,000 a game off their concession sales. So, three away games will cost the club some $18,000.

"It is mega important. This band program impacts hundreds of students, hundreds of parents in the whole district," says Williams.

Money made from concession profits goes to help pay for scholarships throughout the year, travel expenses and music lessons for the band.

The booster club will be meeting next week to come up with alternative fundraising ideas.
