No Indictment For Driver In Deadly 2013 Casino Bus Crash
IRVING, Texas (CBSDFW/AP) - A Dallas County grand jury has decided not to indict the bus driver in the fatal accident involving senior citizens on their way to an Oklahoma casino last year.
The Department of Public Safety had recommended a charge of criminally negligent homicide be filed against diver Loyd Rieve when the bus he was driving swerved off the George Bush Turnpike near DFW Airport and struck a concrete barrier - flipping the vehicle on it's side. The crash killed three people on the bus, including the organizer of the trip, known to friends as "Casino Sue."
According to the Dallas Co. District Attorney's office, Rieve was never charged with any crime after the crash.
An email from the DA's office stated "The case was referred to the grand jury to see if they believed there should be charges for criminally negligent homicide and based on their investigation the answer to that question is that there should be no charges."
The grand jury issued its decision in November.
Rieve still faces more than a dozen civil lawsuits in the crash, which injured dozens of passengers.
Attorney Frank Branson, who represents the estate of a woman killed in the accident, thinks the grand jury was only presented a fraction of the evidence.
"This time, next year, we ought to have a lot more information from depositions about what really happened." said Branson.
Rieve's civil attorney declined to comment Wednesday.
In 1998 Rieve was involved in another bus accident that killed a man. Another grand jury declined to indict in that case.
