No Announcement Yet On Love Field Airport Gates
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - An announcement on which airline will get to use two gates at Dallas Love Field Airport did not come Friday as first expected.
Dallas City Manager A.C. Gonzalez told city council members and reporters that Friday evening he is still reviewing relevant information with the city attorney.
A source though tells CBS 11 News Gonzalez is in the process of approving Virgin America for the two gates.
Virgin America, Southwest, and Delta Airlines are all vying for use of the two gates that American Airlines must give up.
The U.S. Justice Department required American to sub-lease the gates to Virgin America as part of the merger deal with US Airways. The city manager must sign off on the deal.
The government told the city it would reject any attempt to have either Southwest or Delta use the gates.
A consultant hired by the city concluded Southwest should get the gates because it would be best for the city. But the Justice Department and other airline industry experts believe Virgin America's presence at Love Field will boost competition and lower airfares.
When flight restrictions known as the Wright Amendment end at Love Field on October 13 airlines will be able to offer non-stop flights anywhere in the U.S.
Virgin America has already begun selling tickets from Love Field, with flights beginning in late October. Company officials said the plan is to move their flights from DFW International Airport to Love Field this October.
