NFL Combine Observations: Quarterbacks
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Some Dallas Cowboys analysts would like the team to draft a quarterback in, say, the fourth round this year. Unfortunately, the events of Sunday at the combine pretty much take Dallas out of the running for the best QB prospect in this draft not named Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III.
That QB would be Michigan State's Kirk Cousins. I believe he's the third best QB in this draft, and after a sharp throwing session in Sunday's workout, he's now starting to leapfrog other prospects. In fact, he may work his way all the way into the first round.
Cousins began the draft process in January, considered around a third- or fourth- round prospect, but has done nothing but raise his stock, first at Senior Bowl workouts last month and now at the Scouting Combine.
Check out his speech at the Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon last summer and you'll see what kind of leadership ability Cousins has. He's a huge reason Michigan State was able to turn around it's football fortunes the past few years.
Bold statement here: If the Cowboys believe Cousins might be their starting QB of the future, I would have no problem with them taking him... yes, even with their first pick. The QB position is that important. But again, that's IF they truly believe he's their starting QB of the future.
After Sunday, I don't think Cousins will be there when the Cowboys pick in the second round.
More on QBs to come. But as for other mid-round prospects, the one player I'm intrigued by is Tennessee-Chattanooga's B.J. Coleman. However, Coleman wasn't able to throw at the combine due to an injury to his pinky finger.
