New VA Secretary Visits Dallas, Pushes For Change

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM)- The man assigned to lead our nations Veterans Affairs said there must be a cultural change in the care for veterans here in North Texas and across the country.

New VA Secretary Bob McDonald is in Dallas Saturday.

He provided a speech this afternoon before the American Medical Association.

But his message was also directed to families, taxpayers and veterans of this community.

The largest healthcare system in the nation, a commitment to the men and women who've served, must right the wrong of inadequate care and inefficient service, McDonald says.

Investigations and accusations of delayed care harming, possibly leading to the deaths of veterans generated a seismic shift in the organization.

McDonald said the real change must start with improving the integrity of the Veterans Affairs institution.

"We're going to undertake to be major organization that will help us Center on the veteran. The only measure will be veteran satisfaction," said Sec. of Veterans Affairs McDonald.

Hundreds of VA workers face disciplinary action nation wide.

McDonald sat down with Scott Pelley for an intensive interview for 60 Minutes. It airs Sunday.
