New Texas Made Firearm Aiming For Acceptance
GARLAND (CBS 11 NEWS) - A new firearm that piqued interest online is made in Texas but it may face an uphill challenge for acceptance.
Slide Fire of Moran, in Shackleford county, is releasing its SFS BFR, a $6,000 rifle that can use ammunition fed by either a magazine or a belt. The belt allows for scores or even hundreds of rounds to be fired at a time, depending on how heavy the ammunition and belt links weigh,
"It's something that people like to play with," says Tom Mannewitz of the TargetMaster store and indoor gun ranges in Garland. He doesn't like the 'bump' technology that allows the rapid fire. "We don't permit it to be shot at our range. because one of our range rules is no uncontrolled rapid fire. When you're "bump" firing a gun it is not under control."
In SFS models the stock is actually springing back and forth horizontally to trigger rapid-fire single shots, a technique called "bumping." It was used in earlier models that are magazine-fed. But Targetmaster's Mannewitz says rifles that "bump" are hard for the average shooter to control. "If somebody was shooting a 'bumpfire' gun here they might be on their target; they're more than likely going to be on somebody else's target or the floor or the ceiling or whatever."
Mannewitz says he understands some people like to see how fast they can shoot; but even fully-licensed and vetted machine gun owners say that can get old. "I'm a class-3 dealer and most people that buy machine guns - once they've shot a couple or three thousand rounds through it, realize how expensive it is, then don't shoot it anymore."
Slide Fire is technically modifying other guns with their parts, and not creating a whole new weapon. And since they still require an individual trigger-pull, the ATF has ruled earlier versions legal for general purchase.
Slide Fire did not respond to our requests for comment about the guns or where they are sold.
