New Push To Ban Distracted Driving In Texas
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Everybody knows that texting while driving is dangerous. But drivers all across the nation are guilty of doing it every single day. Now, there is a new statewide push to get people to put the phone down while sitting behind the wheel.
There is already a ban on texting while driving in Arlington and 24 other Texas cities. And drivers under 18 years old are banned from texting while driving. And it is illegal to text while driving in school zones.
Soon, there could become a statewide law that prevents texting while driving for everyone, everywhere in the state. House Bill 63 is being proposed at the State Capitol. The law would ban drivers from reading, writing or sending texts, emails, tweets or similar messages unless the car is stopped. Anyone caught doing one of those things would receive a ticket. Fines would increase with repeat offenses.
Casey Brooks is a senior at Frontier High School in Mansfield who lost two classmates in a distracted driving crash. Two other friends were seriously injured. "The three people you have in the car with you don't want to die today because you had to get that text message back saying, 'I'll see you in a minute,'" Brooks said.
The big question is whether or not this bill will be approved by Gov. Rick Perry. He vetoed a similar bill in 2011.
