New Proposal To Rename Lancaster Road
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - After a heated Dallas Council meeting just about 24 hours ago, Dallas City Councilman Dwaine Caraway is withdrawing his plan to change the name of Lancaster Road to Nelson Mandela Boulevard.
Caraway confirmed today his decision to pull his proposal to rename a six-mile stretch of Lancaster in honor of the former President of South Africa.
Caraway tried repeatedly to gain support to rename the road after Mandela, but the proposal encountered some push back.
A veterans group suggested that the road be renamed to honor former members of the military because the road has been home to the Dallas Veterans Administration Hospital since 1940.
Now, Caraway has suggested the name of an American veteran to ease those concerns.
He's chosen Dallas educator and coaching legend Raymond Holley.
"He's an American, he's a veteran, he's been dead for more than 20 years. He certainly qualifies," said Caraway. "He is certainly when you read the papers and you read the history of Raymond E. Holley is someone everyone in our community appreciates, respects, and loves."
Caraway says he will amend his proposal and see how the rest of the council responds.
