New On-Demand Car Service May Come To Dallas
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A new on-demand car service could soon be coming to Dallas.
Lyft, a mobile based service that matches people who need rides with people who have cars, recently posted a message on Facebook looking for Dallas drivers.
The company told CBS 11 News it's exploring Dallas as a potential market.
Local taxi cab companies say this is Uber all over again and perhaps even riskier because Lyft does not use professional drivers.
While Uber connects private limo and car service companies with customers through a smartphone app, Lyft connects ordinary car owners with a good driving record who pass a background check with riders.
Cowboy Cab owner, Saied Rafie said the city needs to step in to protect the public.
"Anybody can take their mom's and dad's car right now and put on a pink mustache. Now you are Lyft," he said.
A pink mustache tied to the front grill of a car is Lyft's signature.
According to Lyft's website, with background checks on all drivers and a $1-million liability insurance police, the company goes "above and beyond to create a more safe community"
Rafie, however; said to ensure the public's safety companies like Uber and Lyft should follow the same regulations as taxi cab companies.
However, when the issue of regulating these types of on-demand car services was put on the Dallas City Council agenda last month, council members were flooded with calls from constituents to leave Uber alone.
Without any action taken from the council, Mayor Mike Rawlings sent the issue to the city's transportation committee to be studied.
