New "Mean Green" Stadium Set To Open Saturday
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Apogee Stadium, the new home of the University of North Texas Eagles, will open its doors Saturday when the football team takes on the Houston Cougars.
UNT athletic department spokesman Eric Capper said the $78 million building project is the largest and most ambitious in the school's history.
"It's got every state-of-the-art amenity that you would find at any stadium in the country including the places like Cowboys Stadium and other places that people might be familiar with in the North Texas area," he said.
When ground was broken on the stadium in 2009 Capper said the plan was to make it "green" in more ways than one.
"We took great pride in the development of this project to make sure we were environmentally friendly with everything that we were doing," Capper said. "We're still on pace to become the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified Platinum football facility in the world."
The new Apogee Stadium has nearly 31,000 seats, 21 luxury boxes and 760 club seats.
The same companies that built Cowboys Stadium in Arlington and the AAC in Dallas designed Apogee Stadium.
