New Lunch Options For Lemurs At Dallas Zoo
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Lemurs at the Dallas Zoo now have a new place to have lunch thanks to the efforts of Stanford Alumni and members of the Dallas County Master Gardeners.
The crew planted new edible plants for the animals in a garden located in the Dallas Zoo's Lemur Lookout exhibit. They planted 100 herbs and other plants for the garden, including lemon balm, chives, oregano, thyme, mint, sage and rosemary along with maiden grass.
In addition to adding tasty tidbits for lemur's to munch on, participants covered exposed areas of the garden with mulch; making for a much more lush ambiance. But the gardens, located in a public area of the park aren't just for looks.
The browse garden project is a partnership with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Dallas County Master Gardeners, and are educational as well as functional.
The browse garden project: provides diet enrichment plants for many of the Zoo animals, reduces cost and fuel consumption used for shipping purchased food, avoids the use of chemicals and promotes environmental protection, according to zoo officials.
