New DISD Super Miles Has Homework For Top Brass

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - New Dallas ISD Superintendent Mike Miles is giving himself and his top administrators a major assignment to improve the quality of education and how the district works.

There are 32 items on his list.

Among the items Miles is focusing on is the school buses that take students to and from school.
He calls the process of developing routes flawed -- and says that has resulted in many kids either not going to school or arriving to school late.

Miles says the district's bus system provider, Dallas County Schools, isn't delivering a high quality service and doesn't have enough drivers.

The superintendent also blames the district for not doing a good enough job of giving the bus system the names and addresses of students.

Dallas County Schools says it's already addressing some of the problems, and has been working with DISD to improve busing procedures.

At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Miles said, "So that when they go about setting up bus routes, it's accurate, it's effective, and we will be able to pick up kids in a more timely fashion. so we have a role to play in that."

In addition, the superintendent says the district needs a better system in place to hire teachers, and evaluate teachers and their principals.

He has already spoken about improving the quality of instruction at each of the schools he's visited, which is now 53.

Miles didn't want to talk specifics about this list on Tuesday, because he wants to formally present it to the school board on Thursday.

As for a timetable on when all of these items will be addressed, the superintendent is giving administrators until next October to fix the bus situation, and the process of hiring teachers.

He's giving himself until July 2014 to improve the process of evaluating teachers and principals.
