DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The upcoming opening of Walmart Neighborhood Grocery Stores in Desoto and Lancaster means up to 190 workers are needed for the stores in South Dallas County. And one specific kind of returning Armed Forces veteran is getting a special look.

Vets such as Tony Hulbin, who entered civilian ranks May 1 after 23 years in the Army in one of them. "I've always been told when I retire I'm going to be a catch for whatever organization I work for, but I'm still waiting on that organization," he told CBS 11 News Thursday as he was networking at the Veterans Resource Center in Dallas.

Despite a background in marketing, human resources, and recruiting he's still searching for the right job opportunity. "Yes, sir, it has definitely been somewhat of a struggle... but still looking."

Walmart is recruiting, too. It wants staff for two neighborhood groceries in Desoto and Lancaster opening early next year. It indicates it may need as many as 100 people at each store. It has set up recruiting offices in both cities. No one locally will go on camera, but its main office says it offers preferential hiring of military veterans... provided they have been out of the service less than one year.

Jeff McZeal, Outreach and Employment Coordinator at the resource center, said he's glad Walmart offers the leg up, but wishes it would be open to more vets. "That's good that they've made these offers, it would be nice -- even better -- if they offered it to all veterans. But if they're going to help that target audience, that's great."

Walmart claims in the 18 months it has had the policy it has hired 67,000 vets nationwide, 8600 in Texas. Hulbin hopes to add to those numbers soon, but since he just learned of the program Thursday, he wanted to go home and out of his sweatshirt and sweatpants into clothing that's more businesslike and professional. "I believe in the old-fashioned, 'You can read a person's body language,' and face-to-face is much better than the new technology," he said.

People interested in employment at Walmart can go to the company's website. They can also visit the recruiting offices in person at the Desoto Office, 1100 East Pleasant Run, Suite 133, in Desoto from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. The Lancaster recruiting office is located at 1223 Beltline Road, Suite 118 and in the city of Desoto from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
