New Dallas Initiatives Battle Domestic Violence
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Violence in North Texas and other parts of the nation has forced cities to change how they look at domestic violence, and one Dallas City Council member is going to introduce new initiatives on Thursday that could save lives.
In only the past week, there have been several domestic violence incidents, including the arrest of a man who allegedly shot and killed his wife in the parking garage of UT Southwestern Medical Center. According to city leaders, it is time to crack down on domestic violence, and find help for people suffering from mental illness. Mayor Mike Rawlings called on the city to step up and make changes.
Dallas councilmember Delia Jasso on Thursday will introduce the first new initiatives aimed at changing how the city handles these problems.
Jasso wants the Dallas Police Department to prioritize arrest warrants against people wanted for family violence. She also supports the development of a police department 'Blue in School' education program, with a domestic violence component. Finally, she is asking that the city aggressively start to increase awareness of the programs which are available to domestic violence victims.
The city's domestic violence task force will meet Thursday at about 2:30 p.m. at Dallas City Hall to discuss the issue.
