New Area Code Approved For Dallas Area
AUSTIN, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — The 945 is set to join North Texas area codes 214, 469 and 972 as officials prepare for the looming shortage of available telephone number possibilities.
The fourth area code was approved Tuesday for the Dallas area, the Public Utility Commission of Texas announced.
The 214, 469 and 972 codes are used by Dallas County and parts of Collin, Denton, Fannin, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman and Tarrant counties.
The new code is to be implemented over the next nine months, and telephone numbers containing the 945 area code will be assigned once the numbers available for the other three codes are exhausted early next year. According to the PUC statement, the addition of the code should be simplified since callers within the region already are required to dial 10 digits.
The 214 code area is one of the original codes implemented in the 1947 North American Numbering Plan. The 972 code area was carved from the zone in 1996, but it in 1999 it was combined with 214 and 469 was added as an overlay.
