DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Texas doctors are on high alert after a Pennsylvania woman has been diagnosed with the first known U-S case of a superbug that is resistant to the strongest of treatments available.
The superbug is unnamed but Dr. Glenn Hardesty of Texas Health says it is a strain of e-coli.
He said Colostin, the antibiotic used as a last resort drug to treat e-coli nfections has no effect on this new strain.
Dr. Hardesty said there is a lot about the superbug that doctors do not yet know.
He said "The transmission we are not exactly sure of how it was transmitted we are not exactly sure where the mutation occurred."
He says although the confirmed case is in Pennsylvania doctors in North Texas are standing ready if it ever makes it here.
He added, "We keep a very close eye to sensitivity of microbes."
The woman in Pennsylvania was treated by using a combination of different types of anti-biotics.
