Neighbors Mourn 18-Year-Old Killed In Shooting, Hope Suspect Is Caught

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Witnesses described a spray of gunfire at a Dallas apartment complex that killed an 18-year-old woman and injured her 16-year-old sister.

The two victims were inside their apartment on Highland Hills Drive Saturday when they heard a disturbance outside and looked out their window on the second floor.

The apartment complex turned into a crime scene with windows riddled with bullet holes.

Police say 18-year-old Nequacia Jacobs and her 16-year-old sister were shot from below as they looked out their window. Both were struck and taken to the hospital.

Jacobs died from her injuries while her sister remains in serious condition.

"I heard the gunshots and I heard the kids screaming," said resident Kimberly Brown. "It's heartbreaking. I could hardly get myself together last night because I was thinking about the kids."

Neighbors remain on edge as investigators search for the killer.

"What if that was my daughter? What if something would've happened to her? That's what's really shocking to me right now," said resident Tina Baston.

"It's sad because they just moved here maybe a month ago," said resident Eric Collins. "We sleep by the window every day, and I constantly think I could get hit at any time now."

Tributes to the victims line the stairs at the apartment complex.

"This is going to affect everybody. We're in total shock," said resident Rachel Lewis.

Lewis remembers the first time she met Jacobs when she interviewed the 18-year-old for a job at Wendy's.

"She didn't have any work experience, but her smile... She was just willing to learn. I said, 'I'm going to make sure you get hired.' She's been there ever since," said Lewis.

Lewis also said Jacobs was her daughter's classmate and friend. Jacobs was about to graduate from high school.

"We will miss her a lot. I know a lot of people who still work at Wendy's are devastated," said Lewis.

There has been no word on any arrests. Dallas police released surveillance images of the suspect vehicle and the suspect.
