NCAA Final Four: Florida...No. 1 And Done
ARLINGTON, Texas (105.3 THE FAN) - The past doesn't always predict the future. But Saturday night at AT&T Stadium, it did.
Florida entered its NCAA National Semifinals with some tough precedent to break. The Gators were just the fourth team in NCAA history to be on a 30-game or longer win streak ... the previous three didn't win the title. And Florida head coach Billy Donovan came into Saturday evening's game as the eighth coach to have won his first three national semi-final games ... none of them won that fourth in a row.
That could be the reason for the 63-53 loss by Florida, which had been ranked No. 1 in the nation for much of the year, to UCONN on Saturday.
It could have also been due to the struggles of birthday boy Scottie Wilbekin, the second-hand paint dominance of the Huskies or the play of UCONN's DeAndre Daniels, who said on Friday, "They'll all be talking about me after Saturday."
That combination left Florida (seeking its first NCAA Title since back-to-back ones in 2006 and '07) at a loss while UCONN (which wasn't even eligible for the tourney last year due to a sub-par graduation rate) will play for the championship Monday night at AT&T Stadium.
