Museum Exhibit Inspires Kids To 'Rise Above'
ADDISON (CBSDFW.COM) - An inspirational exhibit is making a stop at an aviation museum in North Texas, aimed at getting kids of all ages to 'fly high' with their dreams. The collection of planes at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum contains several pieces -- and stories -- which are snapshots of history. The temporary exhibit "Rise Above" features a movie about the influential Tuskegee Airmen.
The Tuskegee Airmen were faced with obstacle after obstacle. The short film is part of a presentation designed to teach kids -- and adults, too -- that nothing should stand in the way of your dreams. "It's about a group that was told they couldn't do anything, couldn't go anywhere," said Cavanaugh Flight Museum director Doug Jeanes, "and they really rose above and became one of the most honored units of World War II."
The exhibit and its movie also tell the story of the unique P-51 Mustang, painted to commemorate the Tuskegee Airmen of the Red Tail Squadron. "I saw this airplane being built and I met the guy that started it all, that had the dream," explained Jeanes, "and it's just a great inspiration for me, and it's fun to be involved with it."
Sajid Rahman is a younger history buff, who urged his father to take him to the aviation museum. "They were basically African Americans that were called Red Tails," described the 11-year-old boy. "That was their nickname because they rode planes that had red tails on them." But even though he knows his stuff when it comes to history, the exhibit can teach him a some valuable life lessons.
"It makes me feel good," said Rahman. "It feels great, and feels like I can do anything."
The inspirational "Rise Above" exhibit at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison ends Saturday, with a special finale where visitors can sit inside of helicopters and airplanes, ride in military transport vehicles, and even ride in a military tank.
