CROWLEY (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Crowley are still searching Thursday for a murder suspect who is said to be armed and dangerous. Authorities believe that 40-year-old Kristun Madewell is hiding out in a neighborhood, and have asked homeowners to stay inside and lock their doors.
Investigators spent Wednesday night combing over the area, checking cars and looking for the wanted man. Madewell is being sought in connection to the Friday murder of Christopher Ortega in south Fort Worth.
Undercover detectives had been waiting to arrest Madewell at a home in Johnson County. But he noticed them prior to being taken into custody, escaping in his own car and then stealing a pickup truck. Madewell then led police on a chase into Crowley.
According to authorities, Madewell ditched a stolen truck in a Crowley neighborhood located next to a a park. A family in that neighborhood returned home to find a door mysteriously unlocked. "Came in here and there are all these police officers all over the place, and we didn't know what happened," stated resident Mike Bransom. "My door was unlocked, and that thing's never unlocked."
Officers went into the home and determined that it was safe.
"It was kind of scary," said resident Olga Cortez. "Tried to think if I saw anything, but I didn't, and they just told me to lock my doors and windows and not let anyone in."
Law enforcement officials have been using bloodhounds to track Madewell's scent. Between the neighborhood and the nearby Bicentennial Park, police said that the suspect has numerous places to hide.
In the meantime, residents said that they had a hard time sleeping on Wednesday night, and kids in the neighborhood are scared after watching police swarm through the area. Melissa Uribe stated, "We tried to act as normal as possible so they would stay calm."
All schools in the Joshua Independent School District are in a "soft lockdown" on Thursday while police are in the area searching for the suspect. This simply means that students are staying inside all day.
Anyone with information about Madewell's location is urged to call 911 immediately.
